Imperial College, Oxford University and Cambridge University retained their positions in the top ten global universities in the Times Higher Education rankings, published in May. The top echelons continue to be dominated by US institutions (making up all of the remaining top ten places) but the UK also retains a prominent position with 7 of the top 50 and 11 of the top 100 institutions – reinforcing the global reputation of the UK for higher education. Indeed according to the 2015 Universitas 21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems the UK ranks second in the world when countries’ average incomes are taken into account doing well because it has “stellar research outputs” and is “exceptionally strong in connectivity”.
